If you're a caregiver, respite care can provide a much-needed break while your loved one receives professional support. Funding may be available through Alberta Home Care programs, FSCD, or private-pay options. Here's what families need to know.
Caregivers Need Support Too
Caring for a loved one is one of the most meaningful things a person can do, but it can also be physically, emotionally, and mentally demanding. Whether you're supporting an aging parent, a child with a disability, an adult with complex support needs, or a loved one recovering from illness or injury — it is important to remember that your well-being matters too. That's where respite care comes in.
What Is Respite Care?
Respite care is temporary support provided to an individual who requires assistance, allowing their primary caregiver time to rest, attend appointments, work, spend time with family, or simply recharge. Respite services may be provided in the home, in the community, during evenings or weekends, or as short-term planned support. For many families, in-home respite care is the most comfortable option because it allows their loved one to remain in a familiar environment.
Why Respite Care Matters
Many family caregivers put their own needs last. Over time, the stress of caregiving can lead to physical exhaustion, emotional burnout, increased stress and anxiety, social isolation, and health concerns. Taking a break is not selfish. It is an essential part of maintaining your own well-being and continuing to provide quality care. Respite care also benefits the person receiving support by providing meaningful social interaction, engaging activities, consistent supervision, new experiences and connections, and professional, compassionate care.
Who Pays for Respite Care in Alberta?
Alberta Home Care Programs
If your loved one qualifies for Alberta Home Care services, respite support may be included in their approved care plan. Under Client-Directed Home Care, eligible individuals may have the option to choose their preferred service provider. To learn more: call Health Link at 811, request a Home Care assessment, and speak with your Home Care Case Manager about respite services. Funding eligibility and approved service hours are determined through the assessment process.
FSCD-Funded Respite Care
Families receiving support through the Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD) program may be eligible for respite funding. FSCD-funded respite helps families take a break from caregiving responsibilities, attend appointments or work commitments, support family wellness, and maintain balance at home. If your family currently receives FSCD services, speak with your Children's Services worker about adding or expanding respite support within your Family Support Plan.
Private-Pay Respite Care
Some families choose private-pay respite services for increased flexibility and faster access to support. Private respite care may be ideal when funding is not available, additional hours are needed, families want flexible scheduling, or immediate support is required.
