What Is FSCD Funding and How Can It Pay for Home Care?

Many Alberta families raising children with disabilities are entitled to government funding they don't know exists. FSCD — Family Support for Children with Disabilities — is one of the most important programs available, and it can make a real difference in your daily life.

What Is FSCD?

FSCD is an Alberta government program administered by Alberta Children's Services. It provides funding and support to families caring for children under 18 who have a disability or delay that significantly impacts their daily functioning.

Who Qualifies for FSCD?

Your child may qualify for FSCD if they are under 18 years old and live in Alberta, have a disability, developmental delay, or chronic condition that significantly affects daily life, and require supports beyond what is typically needed for children of the same age. Conditions that may qualify include autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, and other complex needs.

What Can FSCD Funding Cover?

FSCD funding is flexible and family-directed. Depending on your child's assessed needs, it can cover in-home support, respite care, specialized services such as speech therapy and occupational therapy, assistive technology, and family support including counselling and training.

How to Apply for FSCD

Step 1: Contact Alberta Children's Services. Call your local Alberta Children's Services office or visit the Alberta government website to begin the application process.

Step 2: Assessment. A Children's Services worker will meet with your family to assess your child's needs and determine what supports are appropriate.

Step 3: Family Support Plan. Together with your worker, you'll develop a Family Support Plan that outlines the services and funding your family will receive.
